Rapunzel

Rapunzel

$5.00

Rapunzel is an unusual and wonderfully productive cherry tomato, producing spectacular cascading trusses of small, glossy red fruits. Each truss can carry dozens of tomatoes, creating an impressive display as they ripen.

Sweet, juicy and perfect for picking straight from the vine, this is a tomato that earns its place in the garden through both flavour and sheer abundance.

Why I Grow It

I love tomatoes that do something a little different, and Rapunzel certainly qualifies!

Rather than producing ordinary clusters, it develops long, cascading trusses absolutely loaded with little red tomatoes. It's wonderfully productive and rather beautiful to watch growing.

This year I'm experimenting with growing mine on top of a homemade hydroponic bucket tower, allowing those long trusses to hang down. I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs!

In the Kitchen

Rapunzel is a lovely sweet cherry tomato, ideal for eating fresh, adding to lunchboxes or scattering through summer salads.

It's also delicious roasted whole with olive oil, garlic and herbs, or tossed through pasta.

When the plants are producing generously, the tomatoes are excellent for making quick sauces or roasting and freezing for later use.

And, of course, they're perfect for grazing on while wandering around the garden.

In the Garden

Rapunzel is an indeterminate tomato, meaning it continues growing and producing fruit throughout the season rather than forming a compact bush.

Its standout feature is its exceptionally long fruiting trusses, which can carry around 40 or more cherry tomatoes under good growing conditions.

The plant needs strong support and plenty of room for its vigorous growth. It's particularly attractive when trained vertically, allowing the fruiting trusses to hang freely.

Suitable for greenhouse growing or a warm, sunny, sheltered outdoor position.

Care

  • Position: Full sun, ideally 6–8 hours or more daily.

  • Soil: Rich, fertile, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter.

  • Planting: Transplant after frost risk has passed and the soil is warm.

  • Spacing: Approximately 50–60 cm between plants when trained vertically.

  • Support: Provide a strong stake, trellis or overhead support.

  • Watering: Water consistently, avoiding prolonged drying out or waterlogging.

  • Feeding: Feed regularly with a suitable tomato fertiliser once flowering and fruiting begin.

  • Pruning: Train to one or two main stems if desired, removing side shoots regularly.

  • Harvesting: Pick when fruits are fully red and ripe.
