Hillside Stripe tomato developing its striped colouring on the vine at A Garden Between

Hillside Stripe Tomato

$7.00

Why I grow it

Some tomatoes are worth growing simply because watching them ripen is part of the fun. Hillside Stripe starts out beautifully striped and gradually develops warm yellow, orange and red tones as the fruit matures. It's productive, interesting and completely unlike anything you'd find in a supermarket — exactly the sort of tomato I like having in my garden.

At a glance

Type: Beefsteak / slicer
Growth: Indeterminate
Fruit: Large, striped and multicoloured
Position: Full sun
Support: Sturdy support required
Best for: Fresh eating and slicing

In the kitchen

This is another tomato that deserves to be seen. Slice it across the middle for salads, sandwiches and platters where the colour and marbling can do their thing. The substantial fleshy fruit also makes a magnificent piece of tomato toast with little more than good olive oil and salt.

In the garden

Hillside Stripe is a vigorous indeterminate tomato, continuing to grow and set fruit through the season. The developing fruit is particularly beautiful, changing colour as it ripens while retaining its characteristic striping.

Give it plenty of room and good support — the mature fruit can become substantial.

Care

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Water consistently as fruit develops and feed during flowering and fruiting. Tie new growth to sturdy support as the plant grows and protect from frost.

What you'll receive

One healthy, established  tomato seedling grown here at A Garden Between. Plants naturally vary in size and shape and may be supplied in reused nursery pots or growing bags — perfectly useful plastic doesn't need replacing simply because it doesn't match.
