Billy Buttons
Why I grow it
Because they're slightly ridiculous. Billy Buttons produce round yellow flower heads on long upright stems, looking rather like someone has stuck little yellow ping-pong balls throughout the garden.
They're also genuinely useful: good for pollinators, excellent as cut flowers and particularly good dried because the flower heads hold their shape and colour well.
At a glance
Type: Flowering perennial
Growth: Clump-forming foliage with tall flower stems
Flowers: Round, bright yellow flower heads
Flowering: Spring through summer
Good for: Pollinators, cutting and drying
Inventory: 10 plants
In the garden
Plant them somewhere sunny amongst grasses, perennials or more informal planting. The long stems let the yellow flower heads hover above surrounding plants, so they add interest without creating a great lump of foliage.
They're also useful in gardens where conditions get reasonably dry once summer arrives.
For cutting & drying
Cut the stems for fresh arrangements or dry them for later. For drying, hang small bunches upside down somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight.
Care
Full sun and well-drained soil. Water while establishing, but once settled they're reasonably tolerant of dry conditions. Avoid permanently wet soil.
