Why I grow it

Goat Eye (Ojo de Cabra) is a heritage climbing bean I grow specifically for drying. Once cooked, the dried beans have a fantastically creamy texture, making them well worth storing for winter cooking.

They're also wonderfully productive. In my garden, three plants grown together up a bamboo tipi have yielded around 3 kg of beans. That's a remarkable amount of food from a small growing space.

In the garden

A vigorous, prolific climbing bean that needs sturdy support. I grow three plants together around a bamboo tipi, giving them plenty of room to climb.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Allow the pods to mature fully for drying, then harvest and finish drying somewhere airy and sheltered if the weather turns wet.

Care

Keep watered while establishing and during flowering and pod development. Avoid waterlogged soil. Provide support if needed for the variety's growth habit.

What you'll receive

One pot containing 3 Goat Eye bean seedlings, ready to plant on.

Plants naturally vary in size and shape and may be supplied in reused nursery pots or growing bags — perfectly useful plastic doesn't need replacing simply because it doesn't match.
